A couple of months ago I wrote about Curacao To Go, an official iPhone and iPad app for Curacao that is currently also being developed for Android. But Curacao has another official app: the Curacao App from Caribbean Apps (CRAPPS).
This time I spoke to Yvonne van Diepen, co-owner and co-creator of the Curacao App.
Digital Island Guide
The Curacao App is a digital island guide that’s available for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android devices. The app combines tourism related information (restaurants, hotels, shops, events, etc) with historical facts and other interesting island related tidbits. And we wouldn’t be using the word official if it wasn’t also backed by our tourism board. The app is available in Dutch, English and German, with Spanish following soon.
According to Van Diepen, CRAPPS puts a lot of emphasis on the “service” aspect of this app, as users can find tips from locals and wheel chair accessible establishments. And then there’s ‘Augmented Reality’. This feature allows the user to hold his or her phone in a particular direction – as if you would be taking a picture – and the screen will then fill with, for example, all of the restaurants which are located in that direction. Extra information can then be found through the pop ups that appear on screen.
There is also a special coupon category, where users can find digital coupons that can be used at participating locations.
Who doesn’t like getting a free drink or a discount on an entry ticket? And you probably will never forget the coupon at home, because your smart phone is always by your side!
– as written in a CRAPPS press release from October 28th, 2011.
CRAPPS has already launched an app for Bonaire and according to Van Diepen, an Aruba app is already in the works. The Curacao App is currently available for Android, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, with a Blackberry version already in the pipeline.
