Antivirus 2009 Screenshot

During the past couple of months we've had a number of people contact us about an application called Antivirus 2009 that is suddenly running on their computer and showing a variety of malware and it was obviously making them concerned.

The program basically just shows up, starts to "scan" your computer and reports a huge amount of threats. To be able to remove these "threats", it tries to force you to purchase the software but this is obviously a scam and if you are not careful, you might fall victim to it.

We have removed this horrible application from 5 computers during the past month and we realize that it might seem impossible to get rid off, but it's doable and we are going to show you how.

Remove the Antivirus 2009 command from the Startup list

First of all, it's a good idea to remove Antivirus 2009 from your Startup list. Go to "Start", click "Run" and in the dialog box you are going to type "msconfig". This will bring up the "System Configuration Utility" and then you are going to click the "Startup" tab. Look for any Antivirus 2009 commands (they wiill show as av2009) and uncheck it.

Uncheck any av2009 entry you see and click the "Apply" button. You will be asked if you want to restart and you can go ahead and do that. When the pc restarts, at least you wont have Antivirus 2009 starting up automatically anymore.

Additonal files you have to look for....

c:\WINDOWS\system32\ieupdates.exe"

c:\WINDOWS\system32\scui.cpl

c:\WINDOWS\system32\winsrc.dll

If you see any of these, uncheck them as well.

Stop the Antivirus 2009 Services from running

After you have done this, go back to the "Run" box and type in "Services.msc". This will bring up all the services that are running on your computer. Again, look for any Antivirus 2009 commands (av2009, av09 or anything similar) and right click on it and then click on stop.

Delete the Files

Now you can go ahead and delete the folders and files in the Program Files. Go to your Program Files folder and delete any folder that you see that is named AV2009 or Antivirus 2009. If you are not sure that you have deleted everything, you can do a file search across your entire hard disc and search for any files with "Av2009" in them, with "2009" in them, or with "antivirus 2009" in them. Delete any file or instance that you see that has to do with Antivirus 2009.

Search for the 3 files we mentioned earlier as well and delete these as well..

c:\WINDOWS\system32\ieupdates.exe"

c:\WINDOWS\system32\scui.cpl

c:\WINDOWS\system32\winsrc.dll

If you have done all of this, you are almost out of the woods. Scan your computer with legit antivirus software (AVG, Avast!, Bitdefender etc etc) and see if any other Trojans or malware are found. Remove these as well. If you want to remove even more junk, you can run CCleaner and clean up junk files and fix your registry.

Restart your computer after your antivirus/anti-malware scan and you should be good. If you have any questions or are hesitant to try some of these steps, please contact us in the comments or via e-mail and we'll help you through
