UTS 3G Usb Modem Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Dovale

iCon 225

Back in May, UTS unveiled it's new "3G" Usb Modem at EFEX 2008, and it sounded very promising. It was a Usb modem that would work on the 3G/HSDPA technologies, meaning that you would get speeds up to 3.6 Mbit/s. Now, at home I have my 2 Mbit/s connection (which I'm pretty happy with) and I already started to imagine having an additional modem with even faster speeds to go along with it.

Even nicer would be that I wouldn't be bounded by my ethernet cable, but I'd be completely mobile and online anytime and anywhere on the island. Nice indeed. The "drawback" if I may call it that, is that the speed would fluctuate because it's a shared connection and not dedicated like your ADSL. But still, I didn't mind that as much.

The price seemed pretty reasonable, 75 Guilders a month* (after paying an initial fee) for existing ADSL customers and after thinking of the advantages, I signed up inmediately. After about 2 weeks I was called to get the modem, and it was time to check those speeds out.

*(If you are not an ADSL csutomer, you'll be paying Naf. 145,- a month)

The modem itself looks like a regular memory stick. It's a model called iCon 225 that is made by a company called Option. Once you stick it in your Usb port for the first time, it automatically installs the drivers that come along with the modem.

Globetrotter Connect

Your computer will then restart and when you click the "Globetrotter Connect" button, you will be asked to enter a username and password, which will be saved and then you are ready to go.

The Good

- Speed. My speed varied between 800 kbp/s and 2.7 Mbit/s and averaged about 1.7 or 1.8 Mbit/s, which is pretty decent when you consider that we're still in the 3.6 Mbit/s limit and that the upgrade has not happened yet.

- Size. Like I mentioned before, the modem is the size of a regular Usb Memory stick, meaning that transportation is a breeze. It's not a bulky card or a big modem that you are carrying around, it's just like a regular thumb drive that goes into your laptop's Usb port.

3G Modem

- Simplicity. The entire process is fairly straight forward. You just plug it into your Usb port, the drivers automatically install and after you enter your settings the first time, everything gets saved and it's a matter of clicking one button and connecting. No other software, no cables, just plug and connect.

- 3G for your cell phone. The modem has a SIM card inside of it that you can eject. If you have a 3G enabled cell phone, like a 3G iPhone for example, you can take out the SIM Card, stick it in your phone and have a 3G connection on your cell phone. This actually does not work yet but UTS has told us that it will be working down the road which is something to look forward to.

The Bad

- Fluctuating Speeds. I'm not bothered by this but some people might be. But if you accept the fact that it's a shared connection and that your speed will vary throughout the day, you should be ok.

- Bluescreen. For some reason, the modem can't seem to play nice with my laptop. It works fine on every other desktop or laptop I have tried, but my Acer seems to have issues with it. It has "Bluescreened" the laptop after just 30 minutes of browsing, and other times after 2 or 3 hours of browsing. Now I'm sure that the problem is my laptop because it is getting older and it wouldn't surprise me if it could not handle the modem all that well.

Overall

All in all I'm pretty happy with the product. The price (75 a month) is very reasonable for a small Usb Modem that will have me online anywhere on the island. And with speeds going upwards to 7.2 Mbit/s, I really can't complain (even if it will be fluctuating).

(Update: Speeds have yet not been anything close to this yet, at least not in my area)

It's especially handy if you're on the road a lot and need to be online to check mail or connect to your company's intranet and you do not want to be handcuffed by a slow Wi-Fi signal.

I would definitely recommend it if you're in the market and in need of a simple yet fast, mobile broadband connection here on Curacao.

    Hi David,

For the past few days I'm receiving No Network messages for the UTS 3G dongle.
The dongle is found, starts up the Globetrotter application but instead of saying connected to UMTS and allowing you to connect to HSDPA, it says "No Network".
This problem has been bugging me for the last few days. For some reason it's gone and a few hours later it comes back on.
Have you or anybody else an idea of why and how this happens and how to fix it. Or is it UTS who is somehow fxxking things up again?

I'm thinking that it's a problem on UTS' end. I don't think you'll be able to do something to fix it or get around it... they just have to fix whatever is ailing their network.

You could try calling their helpdesk and ask if there's a number you can call for 3G support/complaints. They gave me a number once but calling it was pretty futile.

Hi, I like your site, what ur doing, writing reviews is not that common in Curacao and you certainly got my attention..

I was wondering if this 3G from UTS was still available, I have been searching on their site, but can't seem to find any information on how to sign up for it..

Their website does not mention the 3G, but it still is available. You should check at the new building behind Burger King or the one across the Tax Office. If not, just ask at the regular offices where you pay the phone and adsl bills if they know where you can sign up.

    Dear David,

I am considering signing up for the UTS 3G broadband service.
After almost 6 months of (continouis?) use, would you be able tolet us in on your experience with the reliability of the 3G connection?
Perhaps you could also shed some light on the difference between the two modems offered? Why would one choose the more expensive one?

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

Good questions Walter. I will try to have an article today or tomorrow that will tackle these questions for you.

    Thanks for the kind words...

Hope I can help David answer some of the questions.
UTS charges 75 ANG as long as you already have an ADSL service with them. If you do not have an ADSL I think that price is about 145 ANG per month. I too have been doing an evaluation, and there were rumors that UTS will stop selling the OPTION (Above shown modem) because of it overheating and eventually mall-function (Stop working). They are now selling the HIAWEI E226 modems. They are a bit larger and connect via a USB cable. Apparently there were better results with them.
I have been using both for about 5 months now, and have no problems other than some Vista compatibility, and USB ports lacking sufficient power to stay connected (USB connection drops with modem, resetting connection due to lakc of power). Regarding connection speeds, I was never able to get more than 2.2 Mbit/s but i this was also in the wee hours of the morning, so probably nobody else was on. Due to the inconsistent connection speeds, it is not an ideal solutions for VOIP, I tested a few soft/hard VOIP phones and got terrible results(Skype worked best of all). For gaming also, the lag times are quite great which will cause a delay in gaming experience and even disconnections.

    Conclusion:
If you are going to use it for e-mailing, web-browsing and downloading, it will definitely be a useful tool to have. And another thing, is that the IP address you get, depending on the server you connect that day, might be from the US, and for those who do not k...

Full online TV network shows & US Radio can be viewed/heard as because your connection is in the US and you will not receive the infamous message "Your cannot view or hear this broadcast because you are out or region" :)

Thank you for the input Rainton. It is very much apprciated.

What you're saying here is all true. My Option model overheats pretty badly and it makes my laptop get the "bluescreen". My desktop and other pc's work fine with it, but my laptop can't seem to handle it.

As for the speeds, you are right on. Surfing, e-mails and occasional downloads will be fine....but the inconsistency make it a bad option for gaming or streaming when you need consistent high speeds.

And yes, sometimes you will get a U.S. Ip, and you can see that when you speedtest. It will tell you that you have a IP from Verizon or wherever. The fun part is that you can watch HULU and other things that you usually could not.

I asked and got the same answer... not anytime soon. I've basically given up on this now..
