Upgrading From A Blackberry Curve 8320 To A Blackberry Bold 9000 In Curacao (Review) PDF Print E-mail

Blackberry Bold 9000Last month, my better half decided to upgrade from the Blackberry Curve 8320 to the new Blackberry Bold 9000. She had a post-paid plan with UTS (2 year contract) and wanted to have a similar post-paid plan with the new Bold.

After approaching UTS and having a few back and forths, a deal was made where she could get the Bold 9000 and a "better" post-paid package, with the catch being that the contract be "renewed". In other words, she's tied again to UTS for another 2 years.

The entire process went pretty fast in my opinion. The papers were filled on a Tuesday, the new phone was picked up Friday. We're used to experiencing worse here on the island, so 3 days was pretty good.

Additionally, with the Curve, she had a package consisting of 400 minutes (120 guilders a month) and 54 guilders a month of internet costs. With the Bold, she took 780 minutes (240 guilders a month) and the same 54 guilders of internet costs.

Below, you can read her review and how the new Bold compares to the old Curve.

Recently I replaced my Blackberry Curve 8320 with the new Blackberry Bold 9000.

I was really concerned about how I was going to transfer the information of my Curve to my Bold but to my surprise, the process was really easy. When I installed the software that came with the phone on my computer, there was a feature with which I could easily switch the contents from the one phone to the other. This went pretty smoothly and everything was where it belonged immediately.

The principles of the BB Bold remained the same as the BB Curve. The only difference is that the Bold has a couple more features that the Curve didn't have:

- Word to go

- Excel to go

- Slideshow to go

- Voice note recorder

- A weather application

- More games

- A seperate music file with the ability to sync your media player

- Video camera

- Ability to watch videos

- GPS and Maps

What I Liked:

It is easy to work with and does not differ a lot from the Curve. The more features are great. The screen and the colors are much nicer and I love that the Facebook application is more advanced (which simplifies using Mobile Facebook.)

The shape and size is amazing since I like big phones. The keyboard is better than the curve as the keys are a little bigger. The battery life is also great because I use it often for a full 24 hours and end up charging it every 36 to 40 hrs.

What I Did Not Like:

I have had the pleasure of using the iPhone as well and I have to say that the browsing is much better on Apple's smart phone (Ed. note: Damn straight it is!). The browsing for the Curve and Bold are the same so nothing really changed there. Actually, I find browsing with the Blackberry unpleasant.

The speed of the phone is amazing but I think that the service that UTS provides for mobile Internet is slow. This may be the cause why I am not able to view Youtube on my device.

Overall:

The reason why I started using a BB is because it was a fashion statement for me. It looks cool with any shoe, purse, sunglasses or outfit. I maintain that now as well. It is also very convenient to have my emails available 24/7. Also, I Facebook and MSN a lot and and to have those available to me 24/7 is awesome as well.

It is a very practical phone with great aesthetics.

The irony however is that while I was writing this review, I restarted my Blackberry and got a “JVM Error 102”. Needless to say, I panicked beyond belief and started "Googling" this profusely. Luckily, we were able to fix it or else I would be sitting in a corner right now, crying my eyes out.

Ed. Note: While we were writing this review, the phone gave a "JVM Error 102". After doing some Google searches, we found a thread that gave instructions on how to fix the problem. We followed the steps exactly as mentioned and the phone was back to normal.
