Microsoft Office

With all the talk of Windows 7, another Microsoft announcement has been flying somewhat under the radar. The next version of Microsftt Office (Office 14), will not be limited to your pc and you will be able to run it from a standard web browser.

In an interview, Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop said that the browser-based editing capabilities are being developed in conjunction with the next version of Office, known as Office 14. Microsoft won't say when that version will arrive, but Elop said that a technology preview of the browser-based products will come later this year and that a beta version will be released in 2009.

Microsoft will offer browser-based Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in two ways. For consumers, they will be offered via Microsoft's Office Live Web site, while businesses will be able to offer browser-based Office capabilities through Microsoft's SharePoint Server product.

But if you're afraid that you're still going to be bound by Windows and I.E., you need not worry. It's been announced now that the Office Web Apps will also run on Linux and the iPhone...

A Microsoft blog reiterated this week that the Web-based version of Office won't be tied to either Windows or Internet Explorer.

In a blog posting on its Channel 10 site, a Microsoft blogger noted that, owing to support of Firefox and Safari, the forthcoming Office Web Applications will run on Linux and the iPhone.

We're really looking forward to seeing how Office translates to the web. We occasionally use Google Docs, Google's web based office word processor and spreadsheet tool and it's clear to see that Google has forced Microsoft into this arena. With the great alternatives out there (Google Docs, Open Office), Microsoft needs to step up its game to keep people from making a switch to different office suites and they are trying by the looks of it.
