Get Hotmail On Your Mobile Phone Or Desktop E-Mail Client

Windows Live
On January 14th, Windows Live announced that POP3 was avaible for Hotmail users in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands but as of yesterday, POP3 is available to users worldwide.

You now add your hotmail account to your favorite desktop e-mail application or mobile phone, should it be able to support this. Setting up the account is very simple and I managed to get it working within minutes on my phone. Just add a new account and fill in the following details when prompted:

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)

POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Microsoft is pretty late to the party with the POP3 support if you ask me. A lot of users have switched to Gmail already and are used to Gmail’s IMAP support and I’m thinking that your work e-mail probably also has IMAP availability. So, if you’re still using Hotmail and don’t mind having POP3 email on your mobile device, this is probably cool for you but I don’t think that this will be wowing many people (especially the “techies”) in this day and age.

As for Gmail users, if you have multiple e-mail accounts (gmail, work and others), check out our post here on how to controll all of  your email accounts through your primary Gmail inbox. And should you have multiple Gmail accounts, check out our post here on how to access both of them at the same time.
